Category Questions
The Category Question type lets you add categories with correct answers below each category, and it also lets you add distractors. In this example the question asks for the student to categorize colors as primary, secondary, or tertiary. There are some colors that do not belong to any of these categories so that should remain in the word bank to receive full credit.
The video below provides a demo of this question in preview mode.
Essay Questions
The Essay Question lets you collect a student's open ended response to a writing prompt. Options include the ability to set a minimum word count, a maximum word count, enabling of a rich content editor, and options to display word count and spell check.
In addition, there is an option for grading notes where the teacher can type the main points expected in a written response as a reference during grading. Essay Questions must all be graded manually, which is why the grading notes are such a useful field.
File Upload Questions
The File Upload Question is perfect for performance tasks and projects. Give the assignment a title, make it descriptive so it has meaning for you, the instructor. Then type up prompt in the text box that says . . . "Add Question Stem". Below the prompt you will find optional settings such as:
Show on-screen calculator
Limit File number
Restrict File Types
If you do not restrict file number, then students will be able to upload to teh assignment as many times as needed. In such a case, I tell students I will only be opening and reviewing their most recent upload and dismiss all others. However, limiting the number of uploads is a way to require students to be more careful with proof-reading their assignments before uploading.
If you do not restrict file type, then students will be able to upload any file type when submitting. Somethimes this is fine, but often it is beneficial to restrict the file type. Some examples are:
.pdf – Portable Document Format
.docx – Microsoft Word Document
.xlsx – Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
.pptx – Microsoft PowerPoint
.java – Java Language Program
.py – Python Language Program
.jpeg .png .gif – Image Files
.mp4. – Video File
The video below show a brief demo of a File Upload Question Type.
Matching Questions
Matching Questions allow you to create two groups of content which students matchup by selecting answers from a dropdown menu of choices. Options include shuffling the order of the questions and allowing Canvas to award partial credit.
This video shows what a matching question looks like when a student is in the assessment.
Stimulus Questions
The Stimulus Question allows you to setup a split screen where the question prompt is in the left pane and the attached questions are in the right pane. All of the attached questions should be directly related to the prompt. You can attach any of the following question formats to a Stimulus Question:
The Stimulus Question also has an options setting that lets you change the orientation from Left/Right to Top/Bottom.
